Alexian Brothers

Mission Locations

The Congregation of Alexian Brothers of the Immaculate Conception Province commenced its humble beginnings in 1866 when Brother Bonaventure Thelen came to the United States from Germany. It started with his small act of charity to a sick streetperson in Chicago. Out of compassion, he picked up this man and brought him into his own home and nursed him to health. Now the American Province continues to sponsor four acute care hospitals, older adult ministries and outreach programs throughout the Midwest Area. Aside from these ministries, the American Province has strong presence in the Philippines and a location in Hungary. You are welcome to visit our mission areas below.

PHILIPPINE MISSION (Click here to proceed to our Philippine Mission Site)

The Alexian Brothers' Philippine mission serves the poor and the sick on the island of Mindanao. The mission provides complementary medical, dental services, and other social services that comprise its outreach ministry. The Brothers, supported by lay professionals and health workers, serve in a variety of capacities in programs that feed malnourished children, provide income for poor families, give assistance to indigent patients referred for medicines, and provide medical services.

The mission operates a mobile unit that is equipped for simple laboratory procedures, minor surgery, dressings and a much-needed means of transportation for the staff serving in the outskirts of Davao City.

The Alexian Brothers Health and Wellness Center opened in August of 2001, and is located in Matina, Davao City. The center is equipped with fully automated machines and a complete laboratory facility, allowing for fluoroscopic and general radiological tests, mammography, ultrasonography and cardiac function tests. It houses a staff of 45 medical/dental practitioners of varied specialties.

A multi-function room comfortably seating 60-80 persons is available for health related and wellness programs. The center is actively pursuing holistic and complimentary ways to approach health and well-being. Nominal fees are collected in the spirit of making health care affordable and within reach of all.

HUNGARIAN MISSION (Click here to proceed to our Hungarian Mission Site)
In February of 2003, Brother Joseph Francis Czeban began the Alexian ministry in Hungary. He started by providing pastoral care to the elderly in Györ, Hungary and to patients at the nearby local hospitals. On October 8, 2003, the Hungarian government officially recognized the Alexian Brothers as a religious order. The Brothers operate a skilled nursing facility for the elderly on the same property as the Brothers' residence. Alexian associates and Eucharistic ministers assist the Brothers in their ministry here.
