Birth of Mary

Immaculate Conception Province's Missions

The Congregation of Alexian Brothers of the Immaculate Conception Province commenced its humble beginnings in 1866 when Brother Bonaventure Thelen came to the United States from Germany. It started with his small act of charity to a sick streetperson in Chicago. Out of compassion, he picked up this man and brought him into his own home and nursed him to health. Now the American Province continues to sponsor four acute care hospitals, older adult ministries and outreach programs throughout the Midwest Area. Aside from these ministries, the American Province has strong presence in the Philippines and a beginning foundation in Hungary. You are welcome to visit our mission areas below.

PHILIPPINE MISSION  (Click here to proceed to our Philippine Mission Site)

In 1979, an increase of vocational inquiries from the Philippines was noted by the Vocation Director, and after much prayer and consultation regarding the potential for Alexian Brothers in the Philippines, the Provincial Senate approved the pursuit of vocations and ministry for Alexian Brothers in Davao City. Brother Eugene Gizzi was commissioned as the Director and transferred to the Philippines. October 2, 1981 was set as the Founding Day of the Philippine Mission.

In February of 2003, Brother Joseph Francis Czeban began the Alexian ministry in Hungary. He started by providing pastoral care to the elderly in Györ, Hungary and to patients at the nearby local hospitals. On October 8, 2003, the Hungarian government officially recognized the Alexian Brothers as a religious order. A new monastery has been constructed that houses the new Community of Alexian Brothers in Hungary. A volunteers program has been developed to serve as Eucharistic ministers and Alexian Brothers associates.
